A wide variety of research indicates that outdoor play time among children has decreased significantly in the last 20 years. According to Outward Bound, American children spend an average of only 4-7 minutes per day in unstructured outdoor play. The negative effects of this reality on their physical and mental health are well documented. Even more importantly, and much less talked about, is a spiritual disconnection from creation that we believe allows kids to miss an important avenue to get to know their Creator as described in Romans Chapter 1!
The Young Explorers Society inspires and enables kids to RECONNECT. Among other programs, our flagship 1st-8th grade Semester Homeschool Program will provide a weekly daytrip for 99 students during the Fall 2024 semester. We INSPIRE our students by exploring a huge variety of amazing places (100 sites around Chattanooga and counting), thoughtfully building their capacity to wonder at the natural world (and the people) around them, and engaging in soft-skills discussions to help students understand the deeper purpose behind these fun experiences. We ENABLE students by developing hard skills like paddling, climbing, and general outdoor savvy in all weather conditions, and engaging in local stewardship projects to help kids understand what it takes to be responsible caretakers.
When Y.E.S. was founded, part of our vision was for this program to be accessible to as many families as possible, so we have raised funds to offer financial assistance for our Semester Homeschool Program since the beginning. Thanks to incredibly generous donors, the Y.E.S. Financial Assistance Fund has enabled 110 participants via need-based financial assistance totaling $72,390 since Fall 2020. Y.E.S. programs help lower a number of barriers to make time spent in creation a part of life for more kids and their families. Still, the initial investment for more kids to gain the skills and confidence needed for a lifetime of purposeful outdoor adventures is one barrier that we need YOUR help to lower! As our program has grown, we currently need over $20,000 each year to support financial assistance requests.
Would you consider helping us lower this financial barrier for more families?
